The Ohmu (王蟲, lit. "King of Bugs") are giant, intelligent, and sentient creatures appeared in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

Biology

Along with other insects, fungi, and the New Humans, Ohmu is an artificial species being created by the Old Humans to cure the contaminated world.

Ohmu are enormous, pillbug-like insects with green shells and multiple eyes who are both very strong and sensitive. Ohmu is the largest insect to reach up to 70 - 80 meters in length.

Their shells are very precious and the opening scene in the film shows Nausicaa coming across an Ohmu shell, which can be used for making tools and weapons in the Valley of the Wind.

When the Ohmu are calm, their eyes are a peaceful blue, however, when they are enraged, their eyes go red, and they begin to stampede.

Ohmu is highly intelligent and can communicate through telepathy. They also possess a group mind, and can communicate across time and space. Ohmu also deeply cares wellbeing of members of the species and other insects and Toxic Jungle.

If something attacks the jungle, the Ohmu will charge, thousands of them across the land and destroy everything in their wake. This phenomenon is called the great bore (大海嘯, Dai-Kaishō). They did this thousands of years before Nausicaa, and once they died of exhaustion from charging day and night, the beginnings of the Toxic Jungle grew from them and spread. They attacked the capital city of Pejite too, and destroyed everything, including themselves. In the end, Nausicaa was able to stop them from flattening the Valley of the Wind.

• According to Miyazaki the Ohmu were actually based off of pillbugs.
• Ohmu's voice effects were created with guitars by Tomoyasu Hotei.
• Kurapika, from Hunter X Hunter, is inspired by the Ohmu
